Misschien zegt de naam Dave Monks je weinig. De band waar hij in zingt waarschijnlijk wel: Tokyo Police Club. Onlangs verscheen met All Signs Point To Yes zijn eerste soloplaat.
Geen paniek trouwens, Tokyo Police Club bestaat nog steeds dus het vorig jaar verschenen Forcefield zal waarschijnlijk niet hun laatste plaat zijn. (Even snel tussendoor: ons lievelingsliedje van de Canadezen? Wait Up (Boots Of Danger) waarschijnlijk. Bambi zou ook kunnen. Of anders de classic Your English Is Good.)
Afijn.
Monks kreeg het idee voor een soloproject doordat hij vaak aan het einde van Tokyo Police Club concerten het liedje Tesselate (ook al zo’n fijne) helemaal akoestisch speelde. Aan onze buren van Stereogum vertelde hij een tijdje terug:
“It was this really cool, intimate, conversational moment with the crowd. I think playing that gave me confidence as a communicator. I can just say the words I want to say, people will understand them, and people will appreciate that. You can do more with less.”
En het werkt: All Signs Point To Yes telt zes verhalende gitaarliedjes waar je wel naar moet blijven luisteren. Mooie songteksten zonder opsmuk, zoals in sterke opener Vegas (“Bitching and complaining / Everyone was changing / All this time / You were standing right in front of me”) en prijsnummer The Rules (“Michael, I know that she treated you bad / but don’t take it too hard / she didn’t know what she had”). Eveneens meer dan prima liedje Gasoline (“Modern love is on the rise and I got in too deep / I just need someone to rely on”) is op single gegooid.
