Spencer Burton deelt cadeautjes uit (7.7)

Pubquizfeitje: Countryrocker Daniel Romano zat ooit in een punkband, Attack In Black genoemd. Ook in die band: Spencer Burton. En ook hij wandelt muzikaal tegenwoordig in een veel rustiger straatje (oa in Grey Kingdom en met City And Colour). In 2014 brak hij bescheiden door met de plaat Don’t Let The World See Your Love. Nieuwe liedjes Unmistakable Love en het hier uitgelichte Broken Hearts And Broken Chains laten horen dat hij met opvolger Songs Of klaar is voor een grotere stap.

Songs Of werd opgenomen in Nashville met Andrija Tokic, de producer die eerder facturen stuurde naar Alabama Shakes, Hurray for the Riff Raff en Langhorne Slim. Er zit een speciale gedachte achter de plaat, zo liet Burton weten:

Every song on this record is for someone else. Every song on this record is a gift to someone else. I wrote these songs for me, of course, but for the first time I wrote these songs about other people in my life, some of them for other people to help them through hard times.

En voor wie is het prachtige Broken Hearts And Broken Chains dan? Burton:

I had a young lady come to me and pour her heart out with a whole lot of ‘I’ve got nothing, I’ve heard the story before, I’ve lived the story. I lived the story until I realized that I had everything I need and so does most everyone else.’ Sometimes it takes losing everything to realize you have everything – ‘Broken Hearts and Broken Chains’ are sometimes one in the same.
