Fountaineer is een plaatje (8.3)

Fountaineer komt uit Australië. Natuurlijk komen ze uit Australië, want op de een of andere manier komen daar de laatste tijd fijne new wave achtige bands vandaag (zoals City Calm Down). Van debuutplaat Greater City, Greater Love springt single ‘The Cricketers’ er meteen uit met z’n The National / Joy Division drumbeat, spannende synths en stuwende baslijn.

Het liedje gaat natuurlijk niet over cricket, vertellen ze. “It’s about adolescence, relationships, and mateship. It’s about arriving at a crossroads and trying to find your place in a town amongst people you’ve known your whole life.” Maar waarom dan wel die titel? Het is vernoemd naar het schilderij ‘The Cricketers’ van Russell Drysdale. “It’s such a haunting and beguiling image, and really dramatises life in a regional town,” aldus de band in een interview bij de buren van Pilerats.

Goed, wie haalt ze naar Nederland?
