Good old Steve Lamacq (BBC Radio) zit er meestal niet naast als hij enthousiast is over nieuwe bands (“cracking stuff” zegt Steve). Duo Stables vormt hierop geen uitzondering. Matthew Lowe en Daniel Trenholme maakten met liedje Bossa Nova Hangover een heerlijk mellow indie-folk liedje, een beetje in de stijl van Quiet Hollers.
De mannen van Jonny and Clyde (uit Memphis, TN) laten zich door een hoop beïnvloeden:
A combination of roots music fused by traditional folk stylings. Jonny and Clyde expressively merges influences of blues, folk, country, rhythm & blues, and rock & roll. Songs are primary rhythm driven and vocally charged with focused harmonies and catchy lyrics.
Liedje Sunny Days klinkt inderdaad zomers, maar tegelijk ook met wat hints Neil Young, Israel Nash. Enfin, oordeel vooral zelf, maar wij zijn fan!
Lefhebbers van muziek a la George Ezra, David Ramirez en Roy Orbison opgelet, je gaat Willie Stratton vast heel tof vinden! En dan met name liedje The Way She Holds Me, donkere Americana.
Nicky William bracht met Set Your Loves One Free, We Have You Surrounded zijn debuutplaat uit in 2017. Sinds die tijd heeft Nicky grote stappen gezet in het ontdekken van zijn sound en zijn songwriting. Dat leidt nu tot liedje Bad. Een heerlijk stemmig, melancholisch liedje zoals Nick Cave en Sean Rowe dat ook zouden hebben kunnen maken.
“I have for a long time wanted to make more challenging music and I feel that I found an expression for that this time. I don’t always want it to sound “nice” but rather that it should sound a bit filthy. It’s the kind of music I like myself. But at the same time, me and my producers have wanted to keep parts of the more recognizable folk sound. The upcoming songs move across a broad spectrum and together, it becomes a middle ground between complex and cozy.”
Mercury Slim groeide op in New Mexico. Zo ongeveer elk jaar verhuisde hij weer ergens anders heen binnen deze warme staat. Tijdens zijn omzwervingen vond hij inspiratie is ‘melodic misfits’ als Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain en Nina Simone. Mede daardoor is hij zelf muziek gaan maken en verhuisde hij naar LA. Zijn stijl? Dromerige Americana met een klein electronisch randje. Denk aan Garrett T. Capps, Kurt Vile of Aaron Lee Tasjan. Of natuurlijk aan Mercury Slim :)
The song is very multi faceted and takes on Many roles rather than being about any one thing in particular. I continue to find new meanings as time marches on. Space Cadet about rejecting everything culture and society hands you as what you are supposed to be. As well as rejection of the consumerism and ideology that drives a lot of what’s harming people and the planet we live on. The chorus/ hook is a release from societal expectations. I became a huge Star Trek (particularly TNG) fan after high school and it has shaped how I view the world and what is possible for humanity in a post scarcity society. On another facet, my father and I began working together right after I got out of high school and he drove the company work van. Once I got into Star Trek, which he was already into, it became something we bonded over and we where able to connect in a positive healthy way really for the first time in our lives. He had been gone for half of my childhood battling addiction and was able to overcome what he needed to come back into my families life. We named his work van the NC-17D and it was kind of our ship to drive around and solve mysteries (doing IT work) in.
Stephen Feldman maakte al een paar platen met de band Poppa’s Kitchen maar is sinds een paar jaar op solo-pad onder zijn eigen naam. Vorige week verscheen met Welcome to the Whammy Bar een nieuwe plaat, zijn derde alweer. En van die plaat is het vandaag tijd voor gelijknamige single Whammy Bar. Heerlijk laid-back en zelfs een vleugje Neil Young, als we eerlijk zijn.
We volgen prachtband The Franklin Electric al enige jaren. Zo waren we een paar jaar geleden nog erg enthousiast over liedje Someone Just Like You. Eind september komt er met This Time I See It Out een nieuwe plaat, en daar stuurden de mannen single Why You Gotta Be alvast vooruit. En weer stellen de Canadezen niet teleur. Heerlijk liedje, voor liefhebbers van bands als The Boxer Rebellion and Brother & Bones.
We zijn fan van Angus (& Julia!) Stone. Daarom zijn we natuurlijk ook min of meer verplicht om Dope Lemon te checken. Zeker als er met liedje Rose Pink Cadillac een nieuw liedje is. En wat voor een! Heerlijk relaxt, soulvol, bijna zomers.
