Liefde voor Dan Michaelson (8.5)

Dat we fan zijn van Dan Michaelson, dat wisten jullie al een tijdje. 3,5 jaar geleden verdronken we al in zijn stem. De zanger van The National aan de haal met de donkerste liedjes van Nick Cave, zeiden we toen. Sinds die tijd bracht hij met Memory en Distance nog twee prachtige platen / EP’s uit. En altijd die prachtige, diepe stem en droevige liedjes. Zo ook Old Kisses, zijn nieuwste meesterwerk. Met strijkers dit keer!

Over First Kisses zegt Dan: “..imagine a place where every intimate moment is made material and we are surrounded by the debris of our emotion”. En daarom kunnen wij niet wachten op 8 december. Dan verschijnt er een nieuwe plaat, First Light. En dat album wordt het eerste zonder zijn band The Coastguards. En man, dat belooft een plaat te worden zeg: 

Album opener ‘Careless’ evokes the sparse, haunted landscape of Townes Van Zandt’s ‘Kathleen’, the languid ‘Someone Else’s Dream’ recalls Lee Hazelwood’s lazy drawl, ‘Old Kisses’ is indebted to the intimate reflection of Leonard Cohen and ‘Don’t Let It Pass’ summons the melodic build of ‘Bryter Layter’ period Nick Drake. Recorded over three weeks at The Premises Studios in London, ‘First Light’ features eight violins, four violas, two cellos, two double basses and the odd flash of trombone, all constantly shifting above, below and either side of Michaelson’s staple vocal style.
